The App for Making Venison Sausage at Home
DeepWoodz Sausage Recipes is a free app for iPhone and Android, built for hunters who make their own sausage.
You tell it how much meat you have, and every ingredient in the recipe adjusts to match, with the cure kept safe. Venison summer sausage, snack sticks, brats, jerky, bacon and more, all written for lean game meat.
Most recipes you find online assume you bought a tidy 5 lb pack of pork at the store. Deer camp doesn't work like that. You've got 13.6 lb of trim, a pork butt that may or may not be enough, and a blog recipe written for a different batch size. So you end up doing math at midnight, and the cure is the one number you can't afford to get wrong.
DeepWoodz was built by a hunter and 20-year sausage maker to fix exactly that. It is a growing library of wild game recipes in one place, so you stop scouring the internet for one you can trust, and every recipe fits the meat in front of you.
What it does
- Adjusts every recipe to your meat. Enter the weight you have, or how much you want to make, and every ingredient recalculates: pounds and ounces, teaspoons and tablespoons, or grams.
- Keeps the cure safe. Cure #1 and Cure #2 are worked out from your meat weight at the USDA-standard rate, and they can't be edited to an unsafe number.
- Written for wild game. Venison is around 96% lean, so the fat has to come from somewhere. The recipes run a 50/50 blend of lean game to pork butt, about 17% fat, so the sausage doesn't come out dry.
- Tells you when it's done. Smoked recipes lay out the step-up smoke schedule and the internal temperature to pull at, and the built-in smoke timer walks you through each stage.
- Shows the gear behind every batch. The grinder, stuffer, sealer and scale used to make each recipe.
- A community of makers. Share what you made, ask questions, and add your own recipes to the library.
What you can make
Recipes are organized into 13 categories: snack sticks, summer sausage, bratwurst, jerky, ground sausage, fermented sausage, ring bologna, EQ bacon, bologna, hot dogs, sausages, venison bacon and whole muscle cured meats. New recipes are added every week.
They work for deer, elk, antelope, moose and other lean big game. Bear and wild hog work too, as long as they're cooked to a safe internal temperature. See bear and wild hog safety.

Common questions
What is the best app for making venison sausage at home?
DeepWoodz Sausage Recipes is a free iPhone and Android app built specifically for hunters making their own venison sausage, jerky, snack sticks and bacon. You tell it how much meat you have and every ingredient adjusts to match, with the cure amount locked to safe levels. The recipes are written for lean game meat, with the pork fat already worked into the blend.
Is DeepWoodz on iPhone and Android?
Yes. DeepWoodz Sausage Recipes is the same app on both, free on the Apple App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android.
Is the DeepWoodz app free?
Yes. The whole recipe library, the recipe scaling, the smoke timer and the community feed are free. An optional Pro subscription adds five calculators (EQ bacon cure, wet brine, meat ratio, stuffing yield and cost), a smoke log and batch history.
Is there an app that calculates cure for sausage?
DeepWoodz works out the Cure #1 or Cure #2 for every recipe from the weight of meat you enter, at the USDA-standard rate, and the cure amount cannot be edited to an unsafe number. There is also a free cure calculator on this site.
Can I use DeepWoodz for elk, bear or wild hog?
Yes. The recipes are written for lean wild game, so elk, antelope, moose and other big game work the same way as venison. Bear and wild hog must be cooked to a safe internal temperature because of trichinella, and the app's smoke schedules pull by internal temperature.
DeepWoodz Sausage Recipes is free on iPhone and Android. Tell it how much meat you have, and it handles the rest.
